What are the best types of wood for turning on a wood lathe?

I am a complete novice at wood turning but have managed to make a few decent bowls, before I upgrade to a better lathe I would lke to know the best types of wood to use.

  1. OH! matron
  2. When I was in Woodshop we used pine for practice pieces and cherry, oak, or maple for finished projects. I prefer maple because I remember that it didn't splinter much.
  3. Most hardwoods seem to be easier to use in a lathe because of the fine grain.Try to obtain old newel posts from a reclaimation yard.
