what's the effect of rake angle on the chip formation for a lathe machine?
for a turning process, what's the effect of the rake angle on the chip?

- for a higher rake angle, the chip will tear off more so than be cut off and vice versa for low rake angle
- With a positive rake either sideways or front to back, the cutting pressure will be relieved. The chip will also be assisted in clearing the cutting edge. Any positive rake tends to lessen the cutting edge pressure, but if excessive, may cause the cutting edge to be pulled forward into the cut. Not good. Positive rakes are best used on soft materials (but not copper or brass!). Negative rakes might be used for machining these metals. No raking is probably best for copper. Or a "chipbreaker" edge.
